Nature's Beauty vs Human beauty

Cosmetics sure do look good on the face and enhances ones natural beauty but as it turns out it doesn’t have a good impact on the environment.

Zero Waste reports that more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry, most of which is not recyclable. The majority part of beauty products come packaged in plastic, and its not entirely our fault or the brands seducing us with their overly luxurious packaging. In June 2016, the personal care products council (PCPC) which represents the cosmetics industry globally released a press release stating that they are taking their responsibility seriously. Brands are hastily forming green concoctions and Eco-friendly packaging yet no big company like HUDA BEAUTY OR KYLIE COSMETICS have contributed in damage control.

Commonly the makeup products are made by mixing mineral mica with a thin layer of titanium oxide.

Lipsticks have been made through centuries in different ways but the most common of these days are wax, oil, alcohol, pigment.

Mascara is another makeup product which adds colour and definition to your eyes.

After various governments banned the use of harmful coal and tar, modern mascara recipe is based on water, waxes, thickeners, and pigment changing ingredients, such as carbon for black color.

Common ingredients used in the cosmetic are-

PLASTIC- it is not only used for packaging but also as an active material in cosmetics like hair sprays, hair gels and liquid bandages.

PEARL ESSENCE– Ingredient that gives cosmetic products its shine and gloss. Most commonly they are made by combining natural formed mineral mica with thin layer of titanium dioxide.

PIGMENTS – Thousands upon thousands of pigment colors are created from organic, inorganic ingredients every year, many governments enforce Colour Index International, law that defines what pigments are allowed to be used in cosmetic and food products.

SODIUM CHLORIDE (table salt) – As one of the most common cosmetic ingredients, table salt is used in shampoos, bubble baths, facial cleansers, and body washes.

MICA is one of the most shady makeup ingredient used in the cosmetics industry.

The demand for natural looking makeup, shiny and glossy finish is directly linked to extraction of mica. From nail polish to eyeliner products it is a major contributing product. The majority of MICA used in the industry comes from India, Jharkhand being a majority produce. In 2016 there was a report which stated that many children have died working in these shady mines just to keep the industrial demand alive.

What is the consumption of makeup worldwide?

A new video by Money shows that an average women spends around $43 on a single makeup shopping spree. What is even more shocking is that in a lifetime they may spend around $15000 on makeup, which is a lot of lipsticks, mascara and sure a lot of damage to the earth.

Globally looking at the beauty industry, it is worth an astounding $382 billion. According to a 2017 American survey women between the age group of 25-59 wear makeup daily whereas 20 percent wear makeup several times a week.

Speaking of facial cosmetics like foundation, concealer and blush generated the maximum amount of sales in 2018. Second in line were eye products like eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara. Talking about eyebrow products they have also generated mass sales between 2017-2018.

The beauty industry is known to be resistant to economic downturns - even faring well during the Great Recession of 2008. Though the consumers tend to be more price conscious during that time, they do not stop spending. In 2015, the industry generated $56.2 billion in the US. The largest segment was the hair care early 90,000 segments. Skin care is a close second segment with almost $11 billion revenue by 2018. This is growth is driven by the increasing importance of a healthy skin as well as the entry of men in the market.

Talking about the natural alternatives to making the cosmetics there are plenty and the benefits on the skin can be countless. In pursuit of living simpler and more natural lives, going organic is the solution and living a non-toxic lifestyle.

Natural ingredients like honey, rose water and fruits like banana and papaya cleanse and moisturize the skin naturally and better the cleansers available in the market which are expensive and harsh on the skin.

Unfortunately, unlike natural and organic products that use sea salts and other natural ingredients to exfoliate, these products give you the illusion of natural exfoliation while polluting our rivers and lakes. All the plastic leftover drains into the lakes like lake superior and is considered to be one of the newest environmental dangers.

Sometimes the aquatic life ends up eating them and animals nearby. The worst part is if animals eat them, in some way even we humans can.

Organic and natural beauty brands

RMS beauty is an organic makeup brand. The brand had a starting when Rosie Marie was facing health and skin problems and realized how many chemicals and toxins the cosmetics consist of and how they damage your skin irreparably.

She created RMS beauty so that others can have easy access to Luxe, natural and organic based makeup. All the products are made with minimal processing and food-grade raw, organic ingredients to reap the most o the benefits from the naturally occurring vitamins and antioxidants.

100% Pure Beauty has a full collection of skin care, makeup, hair, and body products, all made with natural ingredients. The brand is serious about the way it sources its ingredients, too, using a strict methodology to determine and confirm that its products contain no synthetic ingredients.

Foods for naturally healthier skin-

some of the foods which help you get a naturally glowing and healthier skin without applying a $30 Sephora highlighter are mostly green veggies, carrots, beetroots for the natural blush, honey, rice water, curd, turmeric, tomatoes for the glossy glass like skin.

Brands must adapt to consumers desire or sustainable and ethical beauty products. The new philosophy predicts that brands, manufacturers, PR teams and consumers will communally seek to eliminate waste and undo the destruction caused by the industry.
